We are all perfectly broken.

By broken I do not mean flawed, I mean to be human means we have been cracked, split in some essential way. Some of us, far more than others. All our stories live in the cracks, in the spaces we hurt, in the scars that healed and those that have not.

As writers, what we imagine our weakness, our greatest shame, the dirt we were never able to clean from the wound—is our greatest treasure.

What we have been told to hide, to never show the world, is where our story dwells.

This is not to say all of our stories are tragic. Some are, but all joy, all laughter, all love, all pain, all discovery is rooted in our humanness.

We are human because we have been broken. We were made to be broken. Writers, if we are brave, can venture into those divides and find the seeds of our stories. It does not matter where and how they grow; tragedy, comedy, horror, fantasy, fiction, memoir, mystery, satire and more, all spring from the same source. This is how we find, and then share truth and the possibility of flight.

I created Blackbird Writing Group to provide a safe, nurturing space to do this work. It is vital to have a supportive guide and a writing community on this powerful and necessary journey.
